The UKNC 2010 Annual Winter conference was hosted by the Tyndall National Institute on 12th and 13th January 2010.
Over 65 attendees braved the elements and participated in the two-day event to hear the latest developments in III-Nitride research showcased by leading scientists.
Invited speakers gave excellent presentations on gallium nitride(GaN) based photonic structures (Evelyn Hu, Harvard University), GaN LED reliability (Enrico Zanoni, University of Padua) and indium nitride quantum wells (Akihiko Yoshikawa, Chiba University).
The conference included many excellent student presentations and posters. The best oral presentation award was given to Samantha Bennett, University of Cambridge for her work on combined atomic probe and transmission electron microscope studies of Mg related defects in GaN.
The best student poster award was given to Lewis Liu, also of the University of Cambridge for his work on the measurement of strain at defects in III-nitride materials.
The conference was sponsored by SFI, Inspire and the Institute of Physics.
The next UCNC meeting will be in this coming summer in Sheffield, UK, as part of UK Semiconductors 2010.
About UKNC The UK Nitride Consortium was set up by industrial and academic researchers to give them the opportunity to discuss ideas and progress on nitrides in the UK and Ireland. In particular it seeks to gain maximum intellectual and commercial return for investment in this area by encouraging self-coordination of the programmes; exploiting existing skills, expertise and relevant equipment already available; through an agreed strategy for research on nitride materials and devices.
